The Teenage Engineering EP-40 Riddim Performance Synthesizer is a dynamic instrument crafted for producers and performers who crave hands-on control over reggae, dub, and dancehall sounds. This powerful sampler, sequencer, and synth lets you shape loops and textures live, with grid-synced grooves and reggae-inspired effects that respond naturally as you play.
Loaded with over 400 carefully designed sounds developed alongside respected reggae artists and producers, the EP-40 Riddim offers classic bass tones, warm synth presets, and pressure-sensitive dub sirens that bring energy to any live set or recording. With up to 12 stereo or 16 mono voices, you can layer sounds freely without sacrificing clarity. Included with the EP-40 Riddim is the EP-2350 Ting microphone (available while stocks last!), which lets you sample your voice and apply four unique vocal effects for extra creativity.
Built for maximum flexibility, the EP-40 Riddim features a subtractive synth engine, nine editable projects, and a full suite of onboard effects. Connectivity is easy via MIDI, USB-C, or sync I/O, and it runs on four AAA batteries for mobile music-making.
Sample, resample, and craft your own sounds
Sampling is at the heart of Riddim’s design. Capture audio from the mic, line-in, or resample your patterns by pressing Sample, then assign recordings directly to pads. Adjustable input levels and recording thresholds ensure clean results in any environment.
Hands-free sampling records precise loop lengths or multiple bars, perfect for evolving textures. Resampling lets you combine layers or entire sections into a single sample, simplifying live performances.
Use the EP sample tool to transfer projects between Riddim and your computer, preserve lo-fi sample rates for character, and store up to 50 minutes of mono audio in the internal memory. Chop mode automatically slices recordings using beat detection or manual control, with dedicated knobs for fine-tuning start and end points.
Play, sequence, and build full tracks
Creating beats on Riddim is intuitive. Each project can include multiple groups and up to 99 patterns per group. Record ideas live with a four-count, or hold Record to input notes step-by-step. Extend patterns, set tempo from 40 to 399 BPM, and save scenes as new song sections. Keys mode turns the pads into a chromatic keyboard for melodies and basslines, while scale selection keeps your notes in tune.
Advanced controls for limitless creativity
Quantize keeps your performances tight, and Timing Correct can fine-tune individual notes. Note Repeat triggers fast rolls or rhythmic hits at intervals from whole notes to 32nd notes, including triplets.
The fader controls group volume by default but can be assigned to other parameters. Two rotary knobs adjust tempo, swing, filters, or effects, with a Shift function for precise control. Song Mode lets you arrange up to 99 scenes into a full track. Commit saves and duplicates scenes so you can create variations without losing earlier ideas.
Powerful effects and live performance tools
Riddim’s FX engine offers delay, reverb, distortion, chorus, filter, compressor, and phaser — all easily accessed with the FX button. Each group can send audio to a master effect, and the entire mix passes through a final compressor for smooth output.
Hold the FX button to transform pads into Punch-In FX controls for real-time effects and pressure-sensitive modulation. Live Input FX processes any external source through the same effects chain, allowing synths or microphones to share your unique sound design.
The master compressor controls drive and speed to tighten drums and smooth mixes, while sidechain compression ducks specific sounds triggered by notes to create movement and groove. Vinyl-style tempo behavior adds natural slowing and detuning during tempo changes, giving your performance an organic, live feel in Live State mode.
