The new Technics SL-1210 / 1200 MK7 Revealed At CES 2019 With DJ Orientated Features

The news is out, Technics just officially revealed their first new DJ focused turntable in around nine years, the SL-1210MK7!

The matte black design, the SL-1210 coming to the UK and EU, and the SL-1200 (Silver Deck) is coming to the US and Japan. The two turntables are identical in every other respect.

Just as we were hoping, the features are aimed squarely at DJs, Technics has seen fit to include;

  • Replaceable phono/power cables.
  • New coreless direct drive motor (eliminates cogging at slow speeds and remains maintenance free).
  • Built-in microcomputer to control the motor and promise better accuracy even when scratching.
  • Reverse platter play.
  • Torque adjust for starting/stopping.
  • Fully digital pitch fader ±8/16%
  • Built from aluminium and fibreglass to reduce vibration.
  • LED strobe that can illuminate in red or blue colour.
  • White LED pop-up stylus light with a high brightness.
  • Matte black chassis and tonearm.

This new model is being hailed as "the first new standard DJ turntable in approximately nine years”.
This new Technics model, with new microprocessor technology borrowed from Panasonic, Technics parent company, allows for increased rotational motor control accuracy during normal playback as well as ensuring that the unit responds accurately to a wide range of DJ play styles, such as scratching.

When, during the press conference, Technics were questioned why only a few minor changes were made to the overall design Technics stated “We wouldn’t dream of drastically changing one of the most renowned products in music history.”

“The new model inherits the traditional design of the same series and maintains the same operating ease, reliability and unrivalled durability, while adding a coreless direct drive motor and other sound-enhancing technologies. It also features new DJ play functions, such as reverse playback. The SL-1200MK7 is launched as the first new standard DJ turntable in approximately nine years”.

However while visually subtle, changes have been made; The SL-1200 MK's finish is matte black and features an all-black tonearm. Technics claim the new model has more accurate tracking; there is a new stylus illuminator and even a reverse play function, to give DJs a full arsenal of tools on which to express their various play styles.

We are still awaiting news as to the pricing and availability of the SL-1200 MK7 but it’s definitely something we’re looking forward to.
